Doug and I paddled out south of Lahaina and a mom and calf came our way. Doug was much closer and got in the water as they approached him.

Below are two pics he got under water:

My pics were limited to surface shots.

Next day out in the same waters with Doug and a friend, Ryan:

The tail action above had been the most surface action we had seen from this pod. For the most part, the calf was surfacing every 5-10 minutes and the adults up for air every 20 minutes or so. A research boat had come in to watch this pod and when they gunned their engines to pursue, it seemed that this put some energy into one of the adults but unfortunately the camera was at my feet and I watched the breach take place as I slowly responded in grabbing the camera and trying to get it up and in place.

Had I anticipated the breach or had the whale provided an encore, I could have got a nice shot. As it was, I got proof but no cigar.
On the day after the day of pics above, my brother and I were again out in the same water and over by where the sub Atlantis surfaces and above the ship wreck of the Carthaginian.
There was a mother, calf and escort that would surface every once and a while but for the most part remained below. Upon one surfacing, they were not far off from us and seemed to be headed in our direction. We slipped into the water tethered to our wave skis and hoped that we might get a glimpse of them if they elected to swim under us. After a few minutes, I could barely make them out as the slowly moved directly underneath me. I had the video camera which I doubted could make them out in the depths but I gave it a go anyway. It got to where I could make out their profiles quite well but they were still probably 60-70' below me and likely just off the bottom.
I did get some marginal video of them as well as the Atlantis checking out the ship wreck:
