Off of Mala Wharf, a mom, calf and escort came up from the south. The mom and calf had been quite active as they approached and had a whale watching boat not followed them up I might have had some good quality time with them near by. As it was, the boat intercepted them an they put on a good show for the boat. They did eventually swim under the boat and towards me. Finally they were within reasonable range for the camera and I did catch one head lunge of the calf's:

After the shot above, the whales seemed to be coming my way as they slipped below the surface and for a while, I could hear the escort singing with the song coming up through the wave ski. He might have been directly under me for a while. I set the topsides camera rig down and grabbed the underwater rig to be ready to hold it over the side should I see any of them through the surface. I no sooner had the UW rig in hand when the calf did a breach quite close off my bow. I actually grabbed the topsides camera quickly and got it up for a quick, unsighted capture of the end of the breach. In the shot below, it is landing on its back and you can see one of its pectoral fins above the splash. Had I not gone for a camera switch I could have got a great shot of the calf in air.

I was so disappointed that it has been well over a week since then that I decided to look at the images on the computer and process them. Below are a couple shots of mom as they moved further off and she was back on her back with pectoral fins in the sky.
