2-24-09 Off Launiupoko under gray skies, there were a number of pods drifting and swimming in the currents. There were a few breaches to be seen but for the most part, there were pectoral fins and tail slaps. The calfs were learning from the adults.
Below is a sequence of shots of the escort (I believe) surfacing, twisting and slapping his tail. The mother and calf had been active on the surface and perhaps he needed to put in his contribution:
A while later, a whale in another pod that had come close by, did a series of tail slaps. It was on its back and was slapping the top of its tail on the water. The fluke tips would curl at times and the whale made some good loud slaps.
